Below are instructions on how to install updates or upgrades for MacOS.


Recommendation: Do this at home right before heading for bed.  Remember to plug-in the power cord to your computer, turn down the volume, do the following steps, and leave the computer lid open just sitting there to run and reboot as needed.


For MacBooks with a newer macOS (Ventura or Sonoma) the screen looks more like an iPad/iPhone, the instructions are:

  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper left.
  2. Select System Settings...
  3. Click General
  4. Click Software Update
  5. It will check for updates (this step usually takes about 10-20 seconds)
  6. Note 1: Installing a minor update takes 5-30 minutes however for major upgrades (IE: Ventura 13.x to Sonoma 14.x) can take 1-2 hours.
  7. Note 2: Updates are automatically downloaded to your computer.
  8. If you have a pending update, please click Install, Upgrade Now or Restart Now.
  9. Reminder to be sure your MacBook is plugged in for power.


For older macOS computer the instructions are:

  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper left.
  2. Select System Preferences
  3. Click Software Update
  4. It will check for updates for about 10-20 seconds.
  5. Note: Installing a minor update takes 5-30 minutes however for major upgrades (IE: Ventura to Sonoma) can take 1-2 hours.
  6. If you have a pending update, please click Install or Upgrade Now or Restart Now
  7. Reminder to be sure your MacBook is plugged in for power.
